NYX OPENED HER EYES slowly, feeling a headache pounding behind her eyes. She hadn’t felt well since the day before. Her mind felt foggy and her thoughts were slow. It was unsettling. She had woken yesterday with a splitting headache, unable to remember what had happened the night before. She’d asked her aunt how she’d gotten home, since she’d driven her car to Dirty Harry’s and it wasn’t in the driveway. Her aunt had made that face she made when she was disappointed.
“A nice young man with black hair brought you home,” her aunt had said. “You were clearly very drunk.”
Even now, as Nyx looked out her bedroom window, she had a feeling that wasn’t right. She didn’t remember drinking anything, and that made it seem worse. She’d cried a lot yesterday, thinking maybe she’d been roofied or something. But that didn’t make sense, either, because she’d been with her friends and then Jet had brought her home. Or, something like that, anyway.
It took her a long time to get out of bed, even though she knew it was getting late in the day. She had chores and animals to feed, but she felt terrible. She had to force herself to put on her dirty jeans and T-shirt, wishing that she could just go back to bed instead. When she stepped into the hall, the light from the window felt too bright, making her head feel cloudier. Going down the stairs was painful, making her brain feel like it was being jarred inside her skull.
Nyx could hear her aunt in the kitchen, making breakfast. The smell of eggs and bacon made her feel nauseous as she sank down into a chair.
“Hey Sweetie,” her aunt said, looking over her shoulder. She frowned when she saw Nyx’s pale face. “Are you sick?”
Nyx let her head fall into her hands. “I don’t know,” she said slowly. “I feel terrible.”
Dorothea crossed to her, wiping her hands on a dish rag before pressing them against her face. “You don’t feel like you have a fever.”
Nyx groaned. “Maybe I’m getting the flu.”
Dorothea frowned more deeply. “Why don’t you try eating some breakfast?” She set a plate in front of Nyx, watching as she picked up a piece of bacon and nibbled on the end.
Nyx could feel her face screwing up as her stomach turned. “I’m not really hungry,” she said, pushing the plate away.
Dorothea crossed to the sink and took a glass out of the cabinet, filling it with water. “Here,” she said, handing Nyx the glass. “Why don’t you go back to bed?” She offered a smile. “I’ll take care of the chores. You rest.”
Nyx nodded, taking the glass. She groaned pitifully as she moved to her feet and shuffled into the living room. She was pretty sure the sun was mocking her, as it felt brighter every time she walked past a window. She made her way back up the stairs and shed her clothes as she pulled the curtains and closed her door.
